June 21, 2015: Isaiah 12:2-3, 4, 5-6

Isaiah 12:2-3, 4, 5-6
Surely God is my salvation;
    I will trust, and will not be afraid,
for the Lord God
[a] is my strength and my might;
    he has become my salvation.
With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation. And you will say in that day:
Give thanks to the Lord,
    call on his name;
make known his deeds among the nations;
    proclaim that his name is exalted.
Sing praises to the Lord, for he has done gloriously;
    let this be known[b] in all the earth.
Shout aloud and sing for joy, O royal[c] Zion,
    for great in your midst is the Holy One of Israel.

Reflection
I admit that I’ve never had to draw water from a well. What was once a way of life for people, is something most of us in modern times would never think twice about. This makes me wonder about the wells of salvation. Is there something that I’m missing in that reference. “You will draw water with joy.” I can’t imagine the chore of drawing water was ever very joyful, yet here there is joy coming up with the salvific waters. I’m sure these wells of salvation were full, never drying up even in the hottest heat and longest drought. The words of Isaiah remind me of the story of Jesus and the woman at the well. They discuss living waters and she leaves to proclaim Jesus to all of Samaria. These living waters, wells of salvation are open and available for us, too. To draw from and to drink recognizing our thirst and fulfilling our need.

Reflection Questions:
Morning: What modern image could replace the image of a well of salvation?
Noon: What are you thirsting for today?
Evening: Thank God for the overflowing waters of salvation that quench the deepest thirst.
