June 18, 2015: Matthew 16:13-19

Matthew 16:13-19

13 Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” 14 And they said, “Some say John the Baptist, but others Elijah, and still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” 15 He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” 16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah,[a] the Son of the living God.” 17 And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father in heaven. 18 And I tell you, you are Peter,[b] and on this rock[c] I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it. 19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”

Reflection:
I had one of my student's parents drop in the other day while he was waiting for his son to finish a test.  He shared that his son is maybe not the best test taker.  He knows that his son knows the answers, but when time comes that pressure gets to him.  The dad shared one time growing up how a teacher was going to give a test and the class told the teacher they wanted the test to be a true/false test only.  She reluctantly agreed.  He had gotten the high score of 92 while everyone else had 60s or below. All of the answers had been true.  The students had outwitted themselves.  Talk about pressure.  This passage reminds of us the ultimate question.  In v. 13 -15, Jesus is asking who the Son of God is.  We hope the disciples are good test takers.  They maybe stumbled a little bit under pressure, but Peter was a rock and tells us that Jesus is the Son of God.  We can hold on to this truth.

Reflection Questions:
Morning: When have you had a hard time with knowing an answer?
Afternoon:  How do you respond in tough situations?
Evening: What do you know to be true in your life?
