March 17, 2015: Hebrews 5:5-10

We encourage you to read this devotion three times a day.  Start in the morning and reflect upon the morning reflection question. Then in the afternoon, read it again and reflect using the noon question for reflection.  For the evening, take time to ponder how this has resonated with you in the day and reflecting using the evening question.  We offer a prayer with each devotion for you to pray or we invite you to pray what is in your heart.

Hebrews 5:5–10
5 So also Christ did not glorify himself in becoming a high priest, but was appointed by the one who said to him, “You are my Son,  today I have begotten you”; 6as he says also in another place,  “You are a priest forever,  according to the order of Melchizedek.” 7In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to the one who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission. 8Although he was a Son, he learned obedience through what he suffered; 9and having been made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him, 10having been designated by God a high priest according to the order of Melchizedek.

Reflection:
This particular scripture showcases the humanity of Jesus.  We understand that he experienced the real emotions of being human.  He felt the pain and tears.  Yet, he still had obedience to the cross. Jesus knew what needed to be done and he died for us.  This is powerful to know the way Jesus prayed and his submission.  How do we obey and find submission to God in our lives.  Today is a day where people celebrate St. Patrick’s Day.  Usually, we think of the shamrocks, wearing green, pots of gold, and more.  However, St. Patrick was known as being humble, always praising God, and giving thanks to being a servant of God.  We give credit to St. Patrick for bringing Christianity to Ireland. This is a great example of someone who obeyed and had reverent submission to following his Lord. We are called to be humble and give our lives to the authority of our Lord.

Reflection:
Morning: Why do you find it hard to obey God?
Noon: What do you hear God calling you to do?
Evening: How can we be obedient to our Lord?

Prayer: Holy one, we are thankful that you are our Lord.  We pray for joyful obedience and a submissive heart.  We want to hear You and follow You.  We are ready to receive your call. Amen.
