March 16, 2015: Isaiah 7:10-14

We encourage you to read this devotion three times a day.  Start in the morning and reflect upon the morning reflection question. Then in the afternoon, read it again and reflect using the noon question for reflection.  For the evening, take time to ponder how this has resonated with you in the day and reflecting using the evening question.  We offer a prayer with each devotion for you to pray or we invite you to pray what is in your heart.

Isaiah 7:10-14

New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)
10 Again the Lord spoke to Ahaz, saying,  11 Ask a sign of the Lord your God; let it be deep as Sheol or high as heaven.  12 But Ahaz said, I will not ask, and I will not put the Lord to the test.  13 Then Isaiah said: “Hear then, O house of David! Is it too little for you to weary mortals, that you weary my God also?  14 Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Look, the young woman is with child and shall bear a son, and shall name him Immanuel.
Reflection:
Growing up we would sing a song that reflected this verse. I still remember the chorus, “God with us, so close to us, God with us, Immanuel.” This promise of a sign came from God to a king and people that were afraid. Their city was surrounded, and they faced a real fear of being conquered. The prophet spoke to the King and they were promised a reminder that God was with them. A child to be born, a person they could see each day, and each time they saw the child they would know that God was with them. I wonder what signs God has put in your life to remind you that God is with you. I have found them many times, in many different ways. Things, big and small, that show up in my moments of fear and doubt to remind me God is in control.
Reflection Questions:
Morning: Think back on a time in your life when something happened to remind you God was in control. What was it, how did God speak to you that day?
Afternoon: I invite you to take a few moments and look around, breathe deeply and find God in your world: here and now
Evening: What signs have you found of God with you, and in your life today?
