April 8, 2015: Psalm 133

We encourage you to read this devotion three times a day.  Start in the morning and reflect upon the morning reflection question. Then in the afternoon, read it again and reflect using the noon question for reflection.  For the evening, take time to ponder how this has resonated with you in the day and reflecting using the evening question.  We offer a prayer with each devotion for you to pray or we invite you to pray what is in your heart.

Psalm 133
1 How very good and pleasant it is when kindred live together in unity! 2 It is like the precious on the head,  running down upon the beard, on the beard of Aaron,  running down over the collar of his robes. 3 It is like the dew of Hermon, which falls on the mountains of Zion. For there the LORD ordained his blessing, life for evermore.

Reflection:
Psalm 133 is one of the shortest psalms, but it is packed with meaning. You cannot help
but be pulled in as the words roll of your tongue as you say them aloud. Oil is a sign of blessing, anointing, and to be marked as someone who fulfills God’s laws and is given aid to do more. When the psalmist talks about the oil dripping from the head onto the beard, and then it is revealed the psalmist has in mind it is Aaron’s beard, it is supposed to fill us with awe and memory. The great Levite, of the priestly order of the Israelites, and aid to Moses to free the Israelites, brings comfort in the covenant between God and God’s people. For to have God’s blessing, to have oil placed upon our head, gives us great meaning and purpose to fulfill what God calls us to do: celebrate life, covenant, and the loving bond between God and the people.

Reflection Questions:
Morning: Have you ever been anointed with oil? What was that experience like?
Noon: What images come to your mind when you think of Aaron?
Evening: How does being a part of a covenant with God, motivate you to live your life
to the fullest each day?

Prayer: Holy God, thank you for blessing us. You have given us far more than we ever deserver and more purpose than we could ever imagine. Help equip us by your Holy Spirit to live out being in covenant with you each and every day. May we honor and show you love, as we celebrate your grace in our lives. Amen.
